is a unit for orientation and position stabilization of unmanned helicopters. The helicopter is being stabilized while being remotely directed by an operator. It requires no piloting skills to direct the helicopter. FlightAssist will make the helicopter hover steadily in  position whenever  the operator idles.


FlightAssist is utilizing redundant optical CCD sensors to stabilize the helicopter close to the ground. Additionally a supporting GPS & compass module provides an absolute position reference for holding the helicopters position at altitudes above 30m.

By using optical sensors when close to the ground, FlightAssist offers an unsurpassed and much more precise position hold than other autopilot systems solely relying on GPS for position referencing.

Furthermore the system can be used in areas such as street canyons where GPS reception is often disturbed. This innovative stabilizing technology is providing a new quality of helicopter stabilization and positioning in a compact, small and lightweight package.



If the control link to the helicopter is lost, FlightAssist will make the helicopter hover safely in position. If control link cannot be regained, FlightAssist can eventually land the helicopter automatically.

In case you lost track of your helicopter and dont know the way home, you can command the FlightAssist module to have the helicopter head home automatically.



Functional Description


The helicopter motion is being optically detected and used to determine its position basically just like an optical computer mouse. Additionally orientation and altitude of the helicopter are being controlled by 3 gyros,  an infrared ground distance sensor and a barometric pressure sensor.


The FlightAssist GPS module is an additional sensor option to support the standard FlightAssist module in optically challenging environments (e.g. over water) and at altitudes of more than 30 meters above the ground. It enables the helicopter to hold its position independently from the optical sensors of the FlightAssist.

At altitudes below 30 meters the optical sensors and the GPS solution are being fused for a maximum position hold accuracy possible.

The system thus becomes very rugged as it can reference GPS under bad optical conditions and in great heights or use optical sensors as a fallback if the GPS signal is being disturbed.


The GPS module is an additional plus of safety and makes  the FlightAssist-GPS an extremely accurate and reliable  autopilot. It´s the optimal choice for aerial photography, video and broadcasting.
